Boehner meets Colombian President to push FTA

Adriaan Alsema

Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John Boehner (R-OH) called on Colombia Wednesday to implement all measures necessary to secure the coming into force of a free trade agreement between Bogota and Washington.

Boehner led a congressional delegation visiting Colombia to "talk with the Colomban government and begin a correct implementation plan of the free trade agreement."

"Implementation of the Colombia free trade agreement is critical to jobs and economic security in both the U.S. and Colombia," Boehner said on his website. "From both an economic perspective and a strategic perspective, the partnership between our two countries has never been more important."

For the treaty to come into power, Colombia will have to implement a number of measures that guarantee specific labor rights and diminish violence towards labor unions.
