Govt goes ahead with Chile free trade deal

18 July 2007

Australia and Chile will go ahead with the drafting of a bilateral trade deal.

Trade Minister Warren Truss says that after initial studies, the Government has decided to proceed with the free trade agreement (FTA).

He says a deal would improve trade conditions with Chile, which is Australia’s third-largest trading partner in Latin America.

But Mr Truss has warned that Australia will not trade off its quarantine protections in the horticulture industry.
