Indonesia fish export enjoys privilege in Japan

Japan has vowed to exempt duty on 51 aquatic products from Indonesia within the next three to five years after the signing of the Economic Partnership Agreement, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

Among the products include mackerel, shrimp, lobster, catfish and tuna, reported economic daily Bisnis Indonesia.

Zero duty on shrimp will greatly benefit Indonesia, which last year became the second largest shrimp supplier to Japan with export reaching 45,574 tons or 19.9 percent of Japan’s total shrimp import.

Shrimp, now liable to duty from 4.8 percent to 7.3 percent in Japan, accounts for 90 percent of Indonesia’s fishery export to Japan .

"Japan is the second largest destination of our shrimp export after the United States... the agreement is of huge importance for Indonesia," Anang Noegroho, a senior official at the Ministry of Maritime and Fishery, was quoted as saying.
