Japan to boost aid for Asia to promote FTA

26 August 2005

TOKYO, Aug 26 (KUNA) — As part of efforts to promote free trade agreements (FTA) with Asian countries, Japan will step up such industrial aid as technical cooperation and personnel development for their automotive sectors.

Preliminary aid agreements have already been reached, with 300 engineers from the auto and steel sectors of both Malaysia and Thailand to receive training in Japan.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will also dispatch technical specialists to the two nations, where they will provide instruction to individual companies, the Nikkei business daily reported Friday.

In the fiscal 2006 budget, the ministry will request JPY one billion (USD 9.

1 million) for outlays associated with the initiative, according to the daily.

The Japan External Trade Organization will help set up talks between Japanese and local firms, as well as assist in a domestic exhibition to increase the profile of Malaysia’s homegrown automobiles.
