Japan urges Indonesia to finalize investment list

7 June 2007

Indonesia needs to finalize the negative lists of investment from Japan because any delay could potentially hamper the signing of the long-awaited Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), a Japanese envoy said Thursday.

Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Satoru Satoh said he hoped the list is submitted to Japan before the visit by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe due in August.

"We have been negotiating (EPA) for the last two years but we still wait for the list of which investment is permitted, which is not," he was quoted by leading news website Detikcom as saying.

"We learn that the Indonesian parliament has passed the investment law, in which the negative list of investment is included. But as long as we don’t get a copy of it, the EPA negotiations cannot be finalized, neither can it be signed in August."
