Japanese Minister urges Thai to support ASEAN + 6 FTA

BANGKOK, 22 September 2014 (NNT) –The Japanese Minister of the Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) met Thailand’s Deputy Minister of Commerce Apiradee Thanthraporn at the ASEAN+6 FTA.

Japan wishes to see Thailand support the negotiations among the 16 nations comprising 10 ASEAN members and six other countries — Japan, China, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand, in order to facilitate and benefit trade between those countries.

In addition, the Minister has proposed the resumption of the Japan–Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA), due to the changing political situations in the two countries. If the JTEPA continues, it will facilitate trade. In addition, he voiced concerns about anti-dumping measures against Japanese steel as it causes higher tax rates and may affect Thai manufacturing industry.
