Next week could bring breakthrough on EU-Myanmar investment agreement

Negotiators from the EU and the Southeast Asian country will meet next week for a fifth negotiating round “to try to resolve the outstanding issues on the text” of a planned investment protection agreement, a European Commission spokesperson told Morning Trade. “We are close, but not there yet,” the spokesperson added.

Response to sustainability concerns: The spokesperson also rejected criticism by the NGO ActAlliance, which recently published a report warning that “investment agreements have failed to prevent human rights abuses by foreign investors” and that new investments could be attracted at the expense of labor or environmental standards.

“The EU is the only party worldwide to include dedicated sustainable development chapters in investment agreements … to ensure that environmental or labor legislation is not relaxed in order to unduly attract investment,” the spokesperson said.
