Orchardists oppose Chile free trade plans

Friday, 27/07/2007

Orchardists say thousands of jobs and millions of dollars could be lost if the Federal Government signs a free trade agreement with Chile.

The two countries start talks on a deal next month, to consider allowing stone fruit, apples, pears and other fruits into Australia.

But the horticulture industry claims it hasn’t been properly consulted, and growers are worried they can’t compete with cheaper imports.

Summerfruits Australia’s Ian McAlister says the impact of a free trade agreement would be very significant.

"We’re saying $600 million worth of our GDP and 5,000 to 6,000," he said.

"They have plum pox, which is the worst viral disease known to man on the planet for stonefruit trees."
