Protest likely on April 28, says Colombian farmer leader

Bogota, Apr 21 (Prensa Latina) — Colombian farmer leader César Pachón, a representative of the group Dignidad Papera, said that the movement may take to the roads to protest on April 20 against the delay in goverment compliance with agreements with the sector.

In remarks released by RCN Radio, Pachon said that the most important demands on issues agreed with the Executive after several negotiations have not been met and the situation is ever worsening.

Pachón, who led the nationwide farmer strike in central Boyaca department last August, specifically referred to the issue of agricultural inputs, whose prices have been rising.

President Juan Manuel Santos announced on March 13 the implementation of several mesaures to ease crisis in the sector, including the regulation of prices of agricultural inputs.

The farmer leader said that the Pacific Alliance, led by Colombia, Mexico, Chile and Peru, have just buried agriculture in the country, destroying the agreements reached in the negotiating table by the Government and the farmers.

The farmers have been demanding for months greater access to land property, the recognition of territoriality, and social investment in urban and rural population in education, health care, housing, public services and roads.
