S. Korea, Canada to hold 7th round of free trade talks

22 September 2006

(Yonhap News, Seoul,) South Korea said Friday it will open a seventh round of formal talks next week on a proposed free trade agreement with Canada.

During the upcoming round, the two nations will discuss how to cut tariffs on goods as well as ways to smooth the flow of services and investment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement.

Kim Han-soo, director of the South Korean ministry’s free trade bureau, and his Canadian counterpart Ian Burney will hold the talks from Monday to Thursday in the Canadian city of Ottawa, according to the statement.

South Korea and Canada launched formal free trade talks in July 2005. No deadline has been set for the completion of the talks.

Canada is South Korea’s 17th largest export destination. Last year, two-way trade was valued at US$6 billion with South Korea having a surplus of $84 million.
