26 June 2007

New Delhi, June 26: The visiting Thailand prime minister, General Surayud Chulanont, said on Tuesday that India and Thailand are close to concluding a free trade agreement (FTA) in goods. A roadshow to speed up the FTA will soon be launched.

At a meeting of the apex chambers of commerce, Gen. Chulanont said, "Our two countries are on track to conclude an FTA covering trade in goods by 2010."

Commerce and industry minister Kamal Nath told newspersons that negotiations on the free trade agreement in goods would commence in July.

Mr Nath further said, "The two sides have also agreed to start parallel negotiations on services and investment parts of the FTA."

However, the Union minister pointed out that no agreement regarding the FTA would be signed during the present visit of Gen. Chulanont. In his address, Gen. Chulanont welcomed Indian investment, particularly in areas of information technology and pharmaceuticals.
