Association Agreement between EU and Central America close to completion

A delegation from the European Parliament (EP) in Managua today highlighted the importance of the implementation of the Association Agreement between the European Union (EU) and Central America to launch the pillars of cooperation and political dialogue.

“The Association Agreement should be ratified as soon as possible to implement the agreement on cooperation and political dialogue,” said the president of the delegation for relations with Central America EP.

The Association Agreement entered into force on August 1st in the EU, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama, and on October 1st for Costa Rica and El Salvador.

While Guatemala, the only country that does not have a treaty in place, is finalizing the procedures to apply on December 1st.

The EU and the six Central American countries have reached broad agreements that manage the EU from region to region, based on three pillars: cooperation, political dialogue, and free trade.

The trade has already gone into effect this year in five countries and only needs to be applied in Guatemala.

“We have seen that in Nicaragua there is a lot of ambition, which was manifested in talks with entrepreneurs, who are already making contact with companies in Europe,” he added.

During visits to Nicaragua, representatives met with the country’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Santos, and other representatives of the government, Legislative Assembly, private sector and civil society.

Santos met on Tuesday with the EP delegation with whom, among other things, addressed issues related to regional security and the partnership, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The group committee is also scheduled to visit El Salvador. (EFE)
