FM, Canadian trade minister discuss ties

Ottawa, Sept 22 (Petra) — Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh on Saturday discussed with Canadian minister of International Trade Ed Fast economic ties between the two countries as a Jordanian-Canadian Free Trade Agreement FTA goes into force early next month.
During the talks at the Canadian parliament, the two ministers stressed the full implementation of the FTA to prop up the trade volume between the two countries and reflect positively on their economies.
They emphasised the need to exploit Jordan’s geographic location in the Middle East as an economic and trade gate to regional countries.
In a joint press conference after the talks, Judeh said the FTA would usher in a new chapter in relations and would lay the basis for a special partnership.
Jordan, he said, would carry out the deal, which exempts Jordanian goods from customs duty, that would boost bilateral trade and help increase investment between the two countries and open new markets to Jordanian goods and products.
Judeh also referred to Jordan’s economic reforms and growth, adding that the Kingdom is now the most competitive in the Middle East.
He said the FTA, the first Canada had signed with an Arab country, would turn Jordan into a regional gate and business hub, particularly as the Kingdom enjoys security and stability.
The Canadian minister will visit Jordan next month for economic cooperation talks and enforcement of the FTA.
