Singapore, Qatar Edge Closer To FTA

SINGAPORE, Dec 24 Asia Pulse - Singapore and Qatar have moved closer to signing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) following high-level government talks earlier this week.

H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Ahmed bin Jassim Al-Thani, Qatar’s Minister of Economy and Commerce, was in Singapore on 21-22 December for talks with Lim Hng Kiang, Minister for Trade and Industry, and BG George Yeo, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on boosting bilateral cooperation.

According to a Singapore government statement, substantive discussions were held in key areas such as trade in goods, investment, and government procurement.

Both nations were confident the FTA would enhance bilateral economic and trade relations by further spurring the growing interest by companies in each other’s regions.

The second round of FTA negotiations is expected to be held in Doha, Qatar in late February 2005.

Both countries aim to conclude the FTA by mid-2005.
