(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) First round of Jordanian-Canadian trade negotiations started here on Sunday with the aim of signing a free trade agreement between the two countries.

The two sides held a preparatory meeting at the Jordanian Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

Representatives of authorities from the public and private sectors attended the meeting, during which all sides exchanged views and suggestions concerning the items to be included in the accord.

They viewed obstacles and difficulties that prevent the Jordanian exports from reaching the Canadian market, where such obstacles would be discussed during the formation of the agreement between the two countries.

Secretary General of the Jordanian Ministry of Industry and Commerce Dr. Montaser Al-Uqlah said as a representative of the Jordanian side that this agreement will add new special advantages to the national economy by allowing the national products of reaching the foreign markets.

The agreement will also increase the number of international markets the national Jordanian products would reach without restrictions on the quantity or custom restrains.

Al-Uqlah said the negotiations will last for five days. In the first round, they will discuss the general framework of the agreement, and its items and contents, besides discussing the possibilities of decreasing the customs charges on the industrial and agricultural products, as well as the regulations of the exporting country, he said, adding that such an agreement will certainly strengthen the economic and trade relations between the two countries.

The two countries will also discuss procedures concerning the importing and exporting of products, and the items of the agreement that tackles the non-custom obstacles, besides the health requirements on the imported products, and items related to environment.

The Jordanian minister of Industry and Commerce engineer Amer Al-Hadidi and his Canadian counterpart David L. Emerson declared in February 2008 launching the negotiations between the two countries in order to sign a free trade agreement to strengthen the economic cooperation between the two countries.

The Canadian products imported by Jordan hit USD 56 million during the year 2007, while the Jordanian exports to the Canadian markets scored only USD 11.2 million in the same year.
