Bilateral consultations are underway between Malaysia and the US to enhance the economic and trade relationship between the two countries in a bilateral channel, following the withdrawal of the US from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

"Malaysia is having discussions with other members that were part of the trade group on whether to go ahead with the TPP or not. On our side, we are having this bilateral consultations to see what progress we can make in the economic and trade relationship in a bilateral channel," US ambassador to Malaysia Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir told reporters at the Corporate Malaysia Rountable event here today.

A meeting will be convened in mid-July between the delegates of the US Trade Representatives (USTR) and Malaysia’s Ministry of International Trade and Industry to discuss trade agendas and issues related to trade and economy.

This will be the first of such meetings to be held in the administration of US President Donald Trump.
