Jordan, Kazakhstan to consider opening free trade talks

(MENAFN - Jordan Times) AMMAN (Petra) - Jordan and Kazakhstan will consider starting talks on a free trade agreement when the joint technical committee from both countries holds two days of meetings starting Thursday.

Besides deliberations on free trade, officials from the two sides will exchange lists of customs tariffs and discuss the purchase of wheat and barley from Kazakhstan at preferential prices.

The two sides will examine measures related to organising Jordanian economic and promotional activities in Kazakhstan, including preparations for an exhibition displaying Jordan’s industries to be held mid-August in Almaty.

Ministry of Industry and Trade Secretary General Muntaser Oqla, who will head the Jordanian delegation, said the Jordanian delegation will invite businesspeople from Kazakhstan to visit the Kingdom to be familiarised with the commercial, investment and tourism opportunities available in the Kingdom.

Both sides will exchange documents regarding import/export procedures and registration of drugs, said Oqla, adding that talks will also cover facilitating the Jordanian companies’ participation in tenders floated by the government of Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstani officials will be encouraged to accelerate the process for approving the investment promotion and protection agreement signed between the two countries in order to go into effect.

Agricultural and transport agreements will be signed between the two countries especially for establishing a cargo air route.

Oqla said cooperation agreements are also to be signed between the two countries in fields of energy and mineral resources, health, education and higher education, environment and tourism.

A seminar will be held to brief Kazakh businesspeople on investment opportunities in the Kingdom.
