Chile Asks for Revision of FTA

Chile has asked for a revision of the Korea-Chile free trade agreement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said on Sunday. Chile wants Korea to open its agricultural market wider.

Originally, Chile agreed to discuss the further opening of the market for about 300 agricultural produce such as chili peppers and garlic after the Doha Development Agenda, the WTO’s multilateral negotiations for trade liberalization, is concluded. But the Doha round seems stuck in terminal stalemate, so Chile asked for the revision now.

The two countries will discuss the matter in a video conference on Oct. 23. A ministry official said Korea will also ask Chile to open its market wider to some industrial products such as refrigerators and washing machines. "We’re carefully reviewing the possibility of a revision," he added.
