Iran mulling FTA with PGCC

19 June 2007

Iran is assessing the impact of free or preferential trade agreement with PGCC

Iran is planning to sign a free or preferential trade agreement with the member states of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council.

Head of Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization Mehdi Ghazanfari made the announcement, adding that the plan is at final stages and would be submitted to the cabinet for approval in the next two weeks.

"During the Iranian President’s recent visit to the UAE and Oman, it was decided that Iran and the PGCC discuss the issue," the official said.

Referring to the free trade agreement currently in progress amongst the PGCC member states, he added," If Iran and PGCC reach an agreement on free trade, the tariffs for export of Iranian goods to these countries and import of PGCC’s commodities will be cut to zero."

"We are assessing the initiative so as to avert any damage to our country’s interests in the possible free or preferential trade deal with the PGCC member states," he said.

"Each of the said deals will definitely boost up trade exchange between Iran and the PGCC member states," he concluded.
