Korea, Canada agree to resume free trade negotiations

President Lee Myung-bak and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper have agreed to re-open negotiations for a bilateral free trade agreement within this year.

Bilateral trade between the two countries surpassed 10 billion U.S. dollars last year.

Trade talks, which began in 2005,.. were stalled when Seoul banned Canadian beef imports in 2008, but that ban was lifted earlier this year.

Meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Mexico on Monday, the two leaders also decided to cooperate further in energy and resources development.

On North Korea, President Lee and Prime Minister Harper urged the Kim Jong-un regime to stop its nuclear and missile-related provocations and to enhance the rights and livelihoods of its people.
