Mexican and EU lawmakers say free trade deal needs overhaul
Mexico City, May 5 (EFE).— European Parliament members and Mexican federal lawmakers wrapped up their joint meeting and called for "far-ranging modifications" to the trade agreement signed in 1997 and implemented in 2000.
"Both delegations agree that the 15 years since the signing of the Global Agreement point to the need for an evaluation of the relationship and, principally, of those areas in which the expected results have not been achieved in terms of the economic sphere, cooperation and political dialogue," the lawmakers said in a joint statement.
The statement was released Saturday at the end of the 15th Mexico-European Union Mixed Parliamentary Commission Meeting.
"Trade between the EU and Mexico has not failed to grow since 2000," the lawmakers said.
Telecommunications, energy and transportation, all areas that were excluded from the original trade agreement, could be included in any revision of the pact, the lawmakers said.
The commission started its meeting on Thursday in Mexico City and wrapped it up in Cuernavaca, the capital of Morelos state.
The next meeting will take place in Europe in the second half of this year.
