Spain and Colombia sign strategic association accord

MADRID, Spain

The Spanish and Colombian governments said Tuesday they had signed a strategic association accord aimed at boosting bilateral contacts and cooperation in economic, political and cultural areas.

The accord was signed during talks between Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos and visiting Colombian counterpart Maria Consuelo Araujo.

Spain already has strategic accords with four other Latin American countries; Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico.

In a joint statement, the two governments agreed to step up efforts to achieve a strategic association deal between the European Union and countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The two also said they would work toward a separate cooperation agreement between the EU and the Andean Community of Nations to promote political, trade and cooperation ties between the two regions.

In a statement, the ministers also highlighted the need for continued cooperation between Spain and Colombia in fighting drug trafficking and dealing with immigration.
