Spain seeks agreement with CAN

11 May 2006

The Andean Community of Nations (CAN) should come to terms first, before pursuing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU), sources of the Spanish Foreign Ministry reported Thursday.

"The EU would like it to happen," a speaker said and added that the outcome of the meeting with CAN members was awaited.

The official underscored that the Spanish diplomacy was making a great effort with CAN, Mercosur and Central America to advance fully backed integration, DPA quoted.

Previously, Bolivian President Evo Morales recalled that he had forwarded letters to the Presidents of Venezuela, Colombia and Peru asking them to consider their position for the sake of the block.

He asked Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez not to leave the block, and the Presidents of Peru and Colombia to terminate the FTA with the United States.
