Sri Lanka, Japan to link FTA this year

Apr 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka and Japan plan to formulate and sign a Free Trade Agreement between the two countries to enhance bilateral trade.

The Sri Lanka-Japan Business Co-operation Committee says that they are preparing for possible a FTA between Fri Lanka and Japan in 2015.

The fact was revealed at a meeting held in Colombo by the Sri Lanka-Japan Business Co-operation Committee under the patronage of Japanese Ambassador in Sri Lanka Nobuhitho Hobo.

"Therefore, in preparation to ensure that we look after the interests of our membership to further enhance their trading activities with Japan, we will be carrying out comprehensive study on the potential areas of items to include free trade agreement between Sri Lanka and Japan," the committee said.

Inputs will be sourced from the membership and the committee will prepare the report that would be presented to the Government of Sri Lanka for consideration in the future.

The Sri Lanka Japan Business Co-operation Committee at its annual general meeting last year announced the possibility of finalizing a FTA this year.
