Taiwan Quick Take: Honduran president to visit

12 August 2006

(CNA) Honduran President Manuel Zelaya is expected to visit Taiwan and sign a free trade agreement (FTA) with President Chen Shui-bian in October, Taiwan officials stationed in the Central American country said yesterday. The officials noted that Taiwan and Honduras have completed two rounds of negotiations on the signing of an FTA, with the next round scheduled for next month. The officials said Honduras has maintained close relations with Taiwan, and Zelaya’s postponement of a scheduled trip to Taiwan this month is mainly because of a teachers’ strike. They said that Zelaya said right after his election as president on Nov. 27 last year that he would visit various countries, including Taiwan, which reflected his attention to relations with Taiwan.
