China deal lacking support

1 July 2008

The number of no votes, have outnumbered the yes votes in submissions on the government’s Free Trade Agreement with China.

Parliament’s Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Trade Select Committee have just released a report on the trade agreement.

It reveals out of the 54 submissions received, 27 opposed the deal, 15 supported it, and 12 were neutral.

Those in favour supported the economic benefits the FTA would bring but serious concerns were raised about potential loss of jobs in our manufacturing sector, China’s human rights record, and the potential for the Chinese to dump goods on our domestic markets.

The Committee is recommending the FTA proceed.
