EU reassures Pacific on economic agreements

28 October 2008

The European Union has publicly assured Pacific island nations they are not at a disadvantage if they do not sign Economic Partnership Agreements.

The civil society group, Pacific Network on Globalisation, has labelled the Economic Partnership Agreement signed between the European Union and the Caribbean as disastrous.

The head of the EU’s trade sector for the Pacific says development aid is a long term strategy and will not be affected if the Pacific does not sign up for EPAs.

Last week, Pacific Island Nations agreed to unite in their negotiations over their EPAs.

Last year, Fiji and Papua New Guinea initialed individual agreements with the EU.
