Peru-EFTA FTA to come into effect on July 1

10 June 2011

Lima, Jun. 10 (ANDINA). The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed between Peru and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) -consisting on Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway- will come into effect on July 1, Peru’s Executive branch noted Friday.

This announcement was published today in El Peruano official gazette in the section of International Agreements.

The FTA between Peru and EFTA was signed on July 15, 2010, after negotiations came to an end on November 2009. The revision of the documents in Spanish and English finished in March 2010.

In May, Switzerland announced to Peru that the FTA was ready to come into effect after being approved by the Swiss Congress.

The FTA covers a broad range of areas, notably trade in goods (industrial and processed agricultural goods, fish and other marine products), investment, protection of intellectual property rights, government procurement, competition and cooperation.

The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is an intergovernmental organisation set up for the promotion of free trade and economic integration to the benefit of its four Member States.

The Association manages the EFTA Convention; EFTA’s worldwide network of free trade and partnership agreements, and the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement.
