Economists Warn of FTA Dangers at Havana International Meeting

6 March 2008

Havana. ACN/Cuban News Agency. The dangers and disadvantages of Free Trade Agreements (FTA) promoted by the United States in Latin America were analyzed on Wednesday during the third day of the 10th International Encounter of Economists on Globalization and Development Problems that is underway at Havana’s Convention Center.

While presenting her paper ‘Costs and Challenges of Peru’s FTA with the United States’, Peruvian Ariela Ruiz Caro recalled that on December 20th, 2007, the presidents of both countries signed the accord as a result of the US’s failure to implement the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).

Ruiz Caro said that with these agreements, Washington tries to implement viable policies for its transnationals and to maximize opportunities for key sectors of its economy.

She added that some of the negative consequences of these free trade agreements include the interruption of domestic productive processes, a limited transference of technology and low generation of national employment.

Ruiz Caro, who is also a consultant of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, stressed that the United States demands a massive opening of agricultural markets in spite of its huge subsidies to dairies, soy, cotton, corn, sugar, rice, wheat and meat.

More than one thousand delegates from nearly 50 countries are participating in the 10th International Encounter of Economists on Globalization and Development Problems.
