El Salvador to concrete six trade agreements in 2011

San Salvado — The government of El Salvador aims to concrete in 2011 trade agreements with Canada, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, the European Union (EU) and the countries of the Pacific Rim.

Deputy Economy Minister, Mario Hernandez, said that talks with Canada were delayed by the absence of that country to the rounds of negotiations, developed along with the rest of Central America.

He added that the goal is to close next year the free trade agreement with Canada (FTA), which will be signed if it benefits El Salvador.

He added it is expected the ratification in 2011 of the Association Agreement with the European Union, which depends on the ratification by the parliaments of the EU and Central American nations.

Hernandez said that in the first quarter it is expected to complete the partial reach agreement with Cuba, a country with which diplomatic relations were restored on June 1, 2009, with President Mauricio Funes.

In the second quarter Central America plans to define which products will be negotiated in the FTA with Peru, a country with which talks began last November.

The official said that by the end of the year, Central America would concrete the unification of unification of FTAs signed with Mexico.

He said that currently there are bilateral treaties between that country and the so-called Northern Triangle (Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras), Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

The sixth treaty is referred to the Pacific Rim Forum, which negotiations shall begin in the second half of the year.
