Japan and Australia resume trade talks for EPA

Japan and Australia resumed talks on Monday on their proposed Economic Partnership Agreement, or preferred trade arrangement, after they fell apart ten months ago.

The four-day meeting in Tokyo between the two countries is expected to cover opening the Japanese market to Australian agricultural and livestock products such as beef, wheat, sugar and dairy products, by reducing tariffs.

Japan’s Kyodo News said that concluding the trade negotiations is likely to be a test for the country’s bid to seek membership in the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a multilateral trade pact.
