FTA agreement with Ukraine will strengthen EU’s competitiveness

3 March 2011

The agreement on a free trade zone between Ukraine and European Union will strengthen the competitiveness of the EU itself. This opinion was expressed by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Hryshchenko at a joint press conference with Foreign Minister of Germany, Guido Westerwelle, during his official visit to Kyiv.

At the same time, he noted that Ukraine’s entry into the European market "may strengthen the tendency of introducing the European style of doing business in Ukraine itself." The Minister expressed the hope for serious progress in the FTA negotiations being held by the First Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, Andriy Kliuyev, in Brussels. Hryshchenko stressed that a success of the FTA negotiations for Ukraine will be the first stage of its full integration into the European Union. In this context, he expressed hope for an active role of Germany in the aforementioned negotiations. In turn, Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, Guido Westerwelle expressed hope that the agreement will be signed this year. He stressed that Germany sees Ukraine as part of a joint European space. According to Westerwelle, the European Union is not so much an economic community, as a union of democratic values. It is therefore of particular importance that the democratic progress would not just exist, but continue, he said. The head of the FRG Foreign Ministry stressed that this progress is in the interest of both Germany and Ukraine, as well as the whole of Europe.
