SAARC Chamber vows to promote trade

22 May 2011

LAHORE: All members of the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SAARC CCI) unanimously resolved to promote trade and strengthen economic ties besides accelerating the developmental activities among member countries.

“SAARC CCI delegates from Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, India, Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal, Maldives and Bangladesh were unanimous that the SAARC countries should join hands in economic activities and refrain from animosities,” said Iftikhar Ali Malik, Vice President SAACR CCI.

He was talking to newsmen after his return from Dhaka after attending the 4-day 51st executive committee special deliberations of SAARC CCI chaired by chamber’s president Annis ul Haq.

The proposed theme “Economic Freedom in South Asia”, a catalyst for socio-economic growth in South Asia” was the follow up of the key decisions taken at the recent SAARC Summit in expanding regional trade and economic co-operation.

He said that deliberations would provide an impetus to liberalisation of inter-SAARC trade through SAFTA.

It would also help improve intra-regional connectivity, which would contribute to smoother trade flows and reduced transaction costs in intra-regional trade.

He said that current global crunch has become a setback for developing and transition economies. Therefore, regional co-operation is one of the most important phenomena today.
