The mixed nature of the agreement: a question of democracy

The start of the approval process for the European Union’s Multiparty Agreement with Colombia and Peru has reignited the debate about the mixed nature of the agreement.

Besides the non-commercial components, such as cooperation on disarmament and nonproliferation of weapons of mass destructions, there are also implications for human rights within the commercial content itself, as has been widely sustained by European and Latin American organizations and political leaders.

The mixed nature of the agreement will allow the national parliaments to analyze and debate the content and its implications, as has been requested by 500 social organizations this week, taking into account the current discussions about a development model in crisis. The process will also set an important precedent for allowing these discussions for other similar treaties.
