Peru, Israel foster agriculture cooperation, eyeing for FTA

4 November 2013

Lima, Nov. 04 (ANDINA). Peru and Israel have signed a declaration aimed at increasing agriculture cooperation and optimization of water resources, striving towards a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Peru’s Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (Minagri) has reported.

The agreement was inked on the sidelines of this year’s edition of international WATEC exhibition for water technology in Israel, by Minagri’s head, Milton Von Hesse, and his Israeli counterpart Yair Shamir.

"We have signed a Declaration of Interest in which is proposed to strengthen cooperation in the fields of agriculture research, technified irrigation and water planning for the benefit of our farmers," the Peruvian minster noted.

Von Hesse stressed the Israeli government is eager to establish a FTA with Peru as soon as possible as the Andean nation has shown a rapid and solid growth in recent years, thus holding a strategic position in Latin America.

Moreover, Minagri’s top official pointed out Israel has proposed to the Peruvian government to develop a feasibility study for wastewater reclamation in the southern region of Ica, as a sample of progress made in terms of cooperation with this nation.
