Chavez: Bush Beats Dead Horse with FTA

Caracas, Oct 31 2005 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez has accused his US counterpart George W. Bush of trying to restore the Free trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), which is a dead project, he asserted.

"Bush will strive to boost the FTAA during the Americas Summit," this week in Mar del Plata, Argentina, the Venezuelan head of state stressed on his television program Hello President.

He emphasized that since the FTAA was dead it must be buried, which Latin American peoples will do.

"Neoliberalism reduces public spending, especially in health and education under the excuse of achieving fiscal balance," he commented, pointing out the US had the biggest fiscal deficit in the world.

Regarding the Mar del Plata summit, Chavez highlighted rejection on this city"s streets against Bush"s presence.

During the meeting from November 4-5, the Venezuelan dignitary will present his alternative model to neoliberalism, a more advanced phase than capitalism according to him.

He noted the amazing strides taken to reduce illiteracy in Venezuela, with education spending now at nine percent of the Gross Domestic Product.

In comparison with the FTAA, Chavez is boosting the Bolivarian Alternative for Latin America and the Caribbean, which defends complementary collaboration between the region"s peoples.
