Some Latino Groups Oppose Free Trade Agreement, L.A. Times Says

Aug. 23 (Bloomberg) — Some Latino groups, such as the League of United Latin American Citizens, oppose the Central American Free Trade Agreement because they say it will export U.S. jobs and lead to the exploitation of Central American workers and the environment, the Los Angles Times reported.

The agreement would reduce tariffs on U.S. farm products, goods and services sold in Central America, and make it easier for those countries to export their products to the U.S., the newspaper said.

The accord could boost California exports 17 percent and create 1,300 jobs in the state within its first year, the paper said, citing unidentified U.S. business leaders. Representative Xavier Becerra, a Democrat from Los Angeles, said the protections for products are stronger than those for workers.
