Dominican pharma reiterates U.S. demands exceed DR-CAFTA stipulations

4 October 2006

Santo Domingo. The Dominican Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (INFADOMI) denounced yesterday as “abusive demands” the requirements recently posed by the United States Trade Representative (USTR), prior to implementing the Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA).

According to the Association, the USTR has maintained a delaying policy regarding multiple projects submitted by the Dominican commission.

“Such is the case of the definition of ‘new product’, which had already been specified in the DR-CAFTA document,” according to INFADOMI, but that the USTR seeks to modify in a way that would negatively affect the local industry.

The Association complained that a similar situation is occurring with respect to property rights and government purchases.
