T&T, Mexico investment treaty signed

Wednesday, October 4th 2006

TRINIDAD and Tobago yesterday concluded the negotiation of its "fastest ever bilateral investment treaty" with another country, in this instance Mexico, Trade and Industry Minister, Ken Valley revealed.

Signing on the dotted line at the Hilton Port of Spain, were Valley and Mexico’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Investment in the Ministry of the Economy, Alejandro Gomez Strozzi.

The genesis of the historic signing took root back in June 2006, when officials from the Ministry visited Mexico on an investment mission, "and we agreed that we needed to put the infrastructure in place, before we could talk intelligently about inward investment," Valley said.

"We decided that since at the ACS we were well advanced on the multilateral investment treaty, that because of the number of countries we were having some difficulties in concluding that Trinidad and Tobago and Mexico should lead the way and put this agreement in force.

Freshly installed Foreign Affairs Minister, Arnold Piggott who was also on hand for the signing said that this country’s face is now better recognised globally, adding: "We are the place that is open for business."
