Associated Press 01.16.07

Japan and Vietnam began free trade talks in Tokyo, an official said Tuesday, following an agreement last year between the leaders of the two countries.

Officials began talks in Tokyo which are to continue through Thursday, an official of the Foreign Ministry said on condition of anonymity, citing policy.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung agreed in October to start talks on a free trade agreement in January.

Japan is one of Vietnam’s top trading partners, and the two countries had been studying the possibility of inking a free trade pact. The two nations have not said by when they aim to sign an agreement, according to the official.
