Nicaragua Seeks FTA with CARICOM

Managua, Mar 3 (Prensa Latina) — Nicaragua has began the negotiations to establish a free trade agreement with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), according to Nicaraguan Promotion, Industry, and Trade Minister Horacio Brenes.

The minister said the approach started last week, during the meeting held in Blelize among Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, and the 15 CARICOM nations.

The free trade agreement would be in effect after recognizing the existing laws and treaties, Brenes told the local press.

According to the minister, there are many "asymmetries" between Central America and the Caribbean.

He said Nicaragua could benefit with imports of oil derivatives from Trinidad and Tobago, while Managua would export sugar, beef, cheese, milk, and other products.
