Singapore, Canada complete seventh round of FTA talks

Fri Mar 2, 2007

SINGAPORE (AFP) — Singapore and Canada have made "good" progress during the seventh round of talks for a free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries, the city-state said Friday.

The latest round lasted five days and concluded in Singapore Friday. Both countries will continue to work on outstanding issues that stand in the way of a bilateral FTA, the ministry of trade and industry said in a statement. It did not say what the outstanding issues are.

"Good progress was made in the trade in goods, trade in services, investment, institutional provisions and dispute settlement chapters," the statement said.

"Singapore and Canada will continue to work on making further progress on the remaining outstanding issues."

The wealthy Southeast Asian state has signed a plethora of FTAs with its trading partners including the United States, Japan and Australia to ensure its trade-led economy will have market access should the global trading system flounder.
