Peru, China Interested in Bilateral FTA

Lima, Mar 30 (Prensa Latina) President of Peru Alan Garcia and member of the Permanent Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China, Li Changchun, confirmed on Friday the common interest to negotiate a bilateral free trade agreement.
This was set out in a meeting of the Chinese leader with the Peruvian president at the government palace in Lima, with the latter proclaiming the objective to turn Peru into China’s main commercial, economic, social partner in South America.
Garcia welcomed the common decision to start preparation of the bilateral free trade agreement and achieve partial agreements on specific issues during negotiations.
Both leaders also expressed the interest to step up relations in several fields and promote more Chinese investment in Peru, as well as intensify bilateral political coordination.
