Dominican Republic seeks Caribbean consensus on Free Trade with EU

15 June 2007

SANTO DOMINGO.- Dominican Republic should manage a consensus with the Caribbean Community countries (Caricom) to establish a joint negotiation that leads to the Economic Association Agreement with the European Union.

Juan Guiliani, the Foreign Relations Ministry’s head of Economic Topics and Trade Negotiations, said in these negotiations the UE has provided a list of excluded goods that reaches an estimated average of 15% for the entire Caribbean region.

He said though considered flexible for a free trade pact, the Caricom countries faced with an imminent trade opening, have differences over the list’s size. The agreement with the UE should take effect January 1, 2008.

Guiliani stressed the importance of the 8th round of negotiations between the UE and the regional consultation entity Cariforum, taking place in Trinidad & Tobago.
