New Zealand to Release Report on China Free-Trade Agreement

9 November 2004 — New Zealand and China will announce the results of a feasibility study into a free-trade agreement later this month, New Zealand’s Foreign Ministry said.

Officials have been preparing the study since the two nations in April agreed a trade and economic framework, the first step toward free trade. New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark plans to meet Chinese President Hu Jintao when both attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum leaders summit in Santiago starting Nov. 20.

The report will be released together with a statement on the next steps after the leaders meet, ministry officials said at a briefing in Wellington. China is New Zealand’s fourth-largest trading partner.

Clark will also meet her counterparts from Australia, Chile, Indonesia and Peru for bilateral meetings while she is in Santiago. A meeting may also be arranged with Russian President Vladimir Putin, ministry officials said.
