Greens’s FTA stand no problem for PM
31 August 2005
The Prime Minister appears prepared to let the Green party vote against trade treaties if it goes into coalition with Labour.
The Greens’ Rod Donald has announced Free Trade Agreements are his party’s bottom line and if in Government, Green MPs would vote down FTAs.
In 2002, the Greens were shut out of coalition talks after refusing to budge on genetic modification.
Helen Clark says support for FTAs could be sought from other parties, allowing the Greens to maintain their position. She says there are Cabinet processes enabling parties to have different views, but she is warning against assumptions on what her coalition make-up would be.
