Indo-Pacific Economic Framework chats expected to continue in 2024

By Carah Hart

The chief ag negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative says discussions on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework are expected to resume in the New Year.

But Doug McKalip says another ministerial meeting has not been scheduled yet.

“The focus is for the months ahead is to continue working with IPEF partners to realize the promise of the effort we’ve put into this framework so far.”

McKalip says a lot of work has been done to develop the agriculture portion of the trade pillar in the last year, which takes a closer look at sustainability and animal/plant health regulations.

“Just having a commitment to develop regulations using science and having a transparent process is something we take for granted in the United States. There’s not always a Federal Register in countries or a clear connection between science, transparency and regulatory development.”

He says the Biden administration is committed to moving forward with IPEF.
