The Philippines and TPP: opportunities and challenges

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with USAID and AmCham Philippines, released a study today that assesses a number of aspects of Philippine trade and investment law against the obligations contained in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement. Entitled "The Philippines and the Trans-Pacific Partnership: A Readiness Assessment," the study looks in depth at IPR, investor protection, rules of origin, service sector liberalization, telecommunication policy, and competition policy, and briefly discusses all other chapters in the TPP. Today’s conference was attended by roughly 200 Philippine and US business executives, including the leaders of the Management Association of the Philippines, the Makati Business Club, and the Philippine Chambers of Commerce and Industry, as well as government officials and other stakeholders.

The Philippines is one of a number of countries that have expressed interest in joining the TPP in the future. The study released today is meant to contribute to an informed public dialogue on this topic in the Philippines.
