Ukraine, Turkey planning to restart talks on FTA – Petrashko

Ukraine and Turkey are planning to restart protracted negotiations and find a mutually beneficial solution to a free trade area.

Minister for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture Ihor Petrashko stated this following a phone conversation with Minister of Trade of the Republic of Turkey Ruhsar Pekcan, the Ukrainian Economy Ministry wrote on Facebook.

"Ukraine and Turkey have close economic ties and an active bilateral dialogue. Today our goal is to restart protracted negotiations and find a mutually beneficial solution for concluding a Free Trade Agreement. I am convinced that this will give an impetus to the realization of our ambitious goal - to increase trade turnover up to USD 10 billion,” said Petrashko.

The ministers also discussed the issue of raising tariffs by Turkey within its capabilities in the WTO and negative impact of such a step on Ukrainian companies.

The parties agreed that one of the options for resolving the situation is to jointly develop an optimal tariff proposal and conclude a Free Trade Agreement.
