Commitee Opposes Approval of KORUS FTA

The National Assembly’s agricultural and fisheries committee said Wednesday that the parliament should not ratify a free trade agreement (FTA) with the United States at this juncture.

At a news briefing, Lee Nak-youn, chairman of the committee, said ruling and opposition party lawmakers agree on a general lack of in-depth research on the possible impact the trade deal might have on the domestic economy, adding that the government has thus far failed to shore up the consent or trust of farmers and fishers.

Lee said that the doubts were affirmed at a recent public hearing arranged by the committee.

He noted that the panel will convey its position and the result of the hearing to a parliamentary committee on foreign affairs and trade.
